Irresponsible marketing

If there’s one thing I despise a lot, that would be irresponsible marketing. You know, using inappropriate images in selling something, a product, a service or an event. The inappropriate images I am talking about almost always are of scantily clad women or those posing provocatively. There are also those taglines, captions and slogans that are full of sexual innuendos. I am sure you’ve seen not only one billboard or print ad poster of this kind of marketing somewhere.

I just wish companies could be a little more responsible. I would understand those products, services and events targeting a mature crowd. But a little more responsibility should go also to where they promote what they have to offer. Kids are impressionable. Young boys are ruled by their hormones more than young girls are but they are all (we are all!) drawn to what is forbidden or those deemed taboo.

A local bookstore is promoting an event for a Korean woman. The Korean was in a provocative pose, about to take her top off and looking like in a sensual trance or something. I am not sure what she is promoting but I’ve seen the event description and I think it’s for a book. I just don’t like the image used. You just know they are luring the guys to come and see the Korean woman up close and personal. To have more people at the event is to consider it a success. So that’s how they invite people to come by putting on an image of the woman looking like she’s going to bare it all at the event? The local bookstore’s Facebook fans are more on the teens and young adult age. I just find the image distasteful!

Am I being a prude? Maybe I am. But there’s the issue on responsible and safe sex, abstinence for those without partners, fidelity to avoid STD from multiple partners, teenage pregnancies, reproductive health, use of contraceptives, etc. I think media is playing a big role in the baby boom and widespread of sex-related diseases. Am I still being prude if I believe a little responsibility in marketing products, services and events can help ease up the raging hormones of every Filipino around?
