A blogger-friend of mine once told me that it was totally liberating to be blogging anonymously. She told me that she had (probably still has) a blog where she rants about life and where visitors comment and even debates with her on some of the issues she wrote about.

I attempted to blog anonymously before but blogger-friends told me that I have a distinct way of writing and one can easily recognize me through it. I guess anonymous blogging is not for me, eh?!

If you want to rant about stuff either in your life or your country or life in general, I suggest you go for anonymous blogging. It will afford you some semblance of privacy needed to not only protect your identity but also to protect some people you might be blogging about.

Choosing the name Sasha

When I began blogging in 2004, I had every intention of being anonymous. My main reason why I wanted to blog was to rant and rave about my life. Mostly rant actually. So why would I reveal who I was when I would be sharing specific stuff about me? But, of course, one cannot blog without a name, right? I thought and searched and I found the name Sasha. It’s from an animated cartoon show that I saw on TV and perfect timing as I wanted a name close to my real one.

So when I opened my very first blog, I used Sasha as my name. From then on, other bloggers, visitors and casual commentators in my blogs have known me as Sasha.

But along the way, I got closer to some bloggers, I revealed my real name to them. I met them and, of course, I introduced myself not as Sasha but the real me. Some still call me Sasha even though they already know my real name and I don’t mind. I think I will keep on using Sasha for as long as I blog.

Do you use a pseudonym when blogging? What are the advantages of anonymous blogging?

BLOGGINGWhen I started out in blogging, I debated with myself whether to use my real name or adopt a name that others would know me by. I opted to adopt a pseudonym and came up with the name Sasha. I got it from a toy collection that a younger cousin had. I figured going anonymous would give me some semblance of privacy that even if I rant about someone I could do it freely.

So I started introducing myself as Sasha in my blogs. It gave me the freedom I needed to just write about whatever I felt like writing without the need to consider if someone would recognize the person I was talking about. Anonymous blogging is liberating!

And then I started gaining blogger-friends. At first only a handful knew the real me. But as I got attached to a lot more bloggers, I slowly ‘unmasked’ myself. Now more bloggers know that Sasha is just an adopted name of mine. They also know me by my real name. I’ve already met in person some bloggers who know the real me. Some are already personal friends of mine that I meet up with regularly.

So let me ask the same: are you using your real name or are you using a psuedonym in blogging?

How and when did I start blogging?

BLOGGINGI am a blogger for more than half a decade already. I started blogging back in 2004. It started out as a therapy for me because I was becoming restless with work, and then my life took a turn for the worse when my mom was diagnosed with a rare kidney disease. I was the lone breadwinner and it’s not an easy task carrying all the burden of making both ends meet and then some.

So I learned how to blog and never looked back. Bravenet.com was the first free blogging platform I learned. I started a blog there and when my boss got me busted on an entry I posted about her (toink!) I searched for a new blogging platform and found Blogger.com.

That’s where I became an active blogger interacting with so many other Pinoy bloggers most of whom I met in person during those 2 to 3 years that I’ve been really active in socializing. I even went as far as Batangas City to meet two teachers with whom I became close with. I met balikbayan bloggers as well one of whom was Ate Ghee of akoni.info who later became my host for a subdomain (sasha.akoni.info) that became my first venture into the WordPress blogging platform.

I enjoyed blogging a lot that I became hooked to it! When I learned how to navigate a WordPress powered blog, I decided to get a web hosting plan of my own and opened this blog, sasha-says.com. I learned how to monetize my blogs and focused on it more than anything else.

From this blog, my online ’empire’ grew. I now have a couple of blogs I regularly update.

I am starting a series on how blogging became a big part of my life. I would like to share this with everyone, especially the new bloggers out there. I am not claiming to be an expert on blogging or anything else but I know I have a few things to share to those who are pretty new to this way of life.
