  • There will be NO CLASSES today, June 24, for pre-schoolers and all levels of elementary and high school because of the Signal No. 2 PAGASA hoisted over the National Capital Region due to tropical storm Feria. Rain has been pouring since afternoon yesterday and has caused floods in certain areas in Metro Manila and the provinces. Stay tuned because PAGASA might up the signal to two and that would mean no classes up to the high school level. (UPDATED, Source)

On a related note, there will be no classes in Manila schools because it’s Araw ng Maynila today, June 24.

  • The number of victims of the Influenza A(H1N1) virus is closing in on the 500 mark. Several schools have suspended classes due to reported cases of the virus. Even my alma mater, University of Santo Tomas (UST), has suspended classes to quarantine the Saint Martin de Porres Building (or the Main Building to students). A student from the College of Medicine and Surgery tested positive for A(H1N1).

Take care everyone. With the storm and the A(H1N1), we are all prone to getting sick. Drink your vitamins and boost your immune system. I believe that’s the best defense we have against the virus spreading around.

Two things from the evening news

  • Novartis AG reportedly has completed production of a vaccine against the Influenza A(H1N1) virus. It will be available by September and at least 30 countries already sent in their request for the supply of the vaccine to their countries. Philippines will wait for the recommendation of the World Health Organization (WHO) before proceeding with our own request. I hope that by the time we made up our mind that we need the vaccines, there will be some more left for us.
  • Smartmatic (www.smartmatic.com) won the bidding on the automated polls for the 2010 Philippine national elections. According to the Commission on Elections (Comelec), the company has the lowest bid in the P11.2 billion automated contract. Smartmatic’s final bid was P7,191,484,739.48 which is about 4 billion pesos lower than the pegged budget. I hope this will really be effective come 2010 polls. No more ballots stolen perhaps? Hacking now?

Confirmed cases of A(N1H1) virus in the Philippines

There are now 21 cases of the dreaded Influenza A(N1H1) virus in the Philippines, according to the Department of Health (DOH). One foreign exchange student from the De La Salle University (DLSU) has been confirmed positive with the virus, causing the temporary shutdown of the campus. Another person was confirmed to be positive. This time, it’s from the Asian Development Bank (ADB).

The good news is that, 11 out of the 21 cases are now cured (Source). In fact, 5 of the 10 confirmed cases who came into contact with the Taiwanese mother and daughter have been discharged from the hospital already.

I hope this virus will be contained soon. Please be careful and boost your immune system. It’s flu season here in the country right now. Rainy season and all. Get a flu shot. It might not totally prevent the virus but then it might help your immune system. Ask your doctor about it. My sister and my brother are getting one next week. We will do everything to help our bodies fight the various diseases spreading around. You should, too.

Influenza A(N1H1) virus

I am not that concerned with the Influenza A(N1H1) virus. That’s because I work at home hehe. No, seriously, I am more concerned with my sister who teaches at a Chinese school in Manila. Her students went on vacation abroad, based on emails and Friendster/YM messages she got from them. There are suggestions from co-teachers that they postpone opening of classes in their school, just to make sure that those students coming in from different parts of the world have enough time to know if they have been infected or not. No word from their school head as to what the decision is.

For now, she’s taking multivitamins to help make her immune system stronger. The same goes for my other sister who rides the MRT going to the office on weekdays. She also had a flu shot last month. I don’t know if it will help ward off the virus, but I hope it does.

There has been a confirmed case of the A(N1H1) virus in the country already. I hope every one who was on that same flight as the 10-year-old child will cooperate with the authorities concerned so as not to spread the virus in the country.
